Frontline Heroes honored by IALI at its 42nd Gala

Garden City, NY: Frontline heroes – doctors and nurses, law enforcement personnel, humanitarians and volunteers alike — were honored for their exceptional service to the community during the pandemic at the 42nd Annual Gala Luncheon of the Indian Association of Long Island (IALI).  Following all social distancing norms and limited guests list, the event was held October 11 at the Mint Rooftop Lounge where many dignitaries joined IALI members.

IALI President Shashi Malik lauded the energy, determination and understanding of the frontline heroes, which is the strength of the Indian community.

On behalf of IALI’s 2,300 members, she thanked Dr. Anthony Boutin (CEO) and Megan Ryan (COO) of NUMC for their contribution towards the community.

The event was graced by Congressman Tom Suozzi, Nassau County Executive Laura Curran, NY State Senators Kevin Thomas and Anna M. Kaplan, Hempstead Town Clerk Kate Murray, Chairman at Nassau County’s Human Rights Commission Bobby Kalotee and Devi Prasad Misra from the Indian Consulate.  

The keynote speaker was Dr. Jay Sarkar, recently recognized as Ambassador and Executive member of the World Organization for Peace Foundation – New York.  

Frontline Heroes who received recognition and awards for their service to the community included: 

Dr. Rajesh Verma, Dr. Smeeta Verma, Dr. Anthony Boutin, Dr. Usha Tandon, Dr. Jag Kalra, Dr. Sukhvinder Ranu. Dr. Rakesh K. Sharma,

Dr. Neha Pawar, Mr. Joseph Sharkey and Ms. Megan C. Ryan, esq, Mrs. Manju Joshi (Nurse), Shalu Jindal (Nurse), Ms. Vaushali Shah (Essential Worker), Anil Bansal (Essential worker), Patrick J. Ryder (Commissioner of Police, Nassau County), Geraldine Hart (Commissioner of Police, Suffolk County), Risco-Mention Lewis (Deputy Commissioner of Police, Suffolk County) Davinder Singh (Firefighter),  Police Officers Salju Thomas, Om Verma, Thomas Joy, Jatinder Grover (NYPD), and Ed Hugh.

Lifetime community service awards went to late Peter Bheddah, Damyanti Goklani and Jaya Bahadkar.

IALI Vice-President Jasbir Jay Singh and Secretary Kuljeet Ahluwalia thanked everyone for their gracious presence at the event.

October being ‘Breast Cancer awareness month’, IALI offered a free mammogram screening camp through the mobile unit with trained technicians in the Hicksville area.
