Kamala Harris for VP: Community reactions

President, Indian-Americans for Trump

Kamala Harris’ selection by Biden to be his running mate is significant for Indian-Americans – both positive and negative. It will excite many of us — this is the closest India has come to the Oval Office. With Biden, 77, and she only 55, she could be President during Biden’s first term if he wins.

On the negative side, during the Democratic primary season, she avoided espousing her Indian descent. Only when pressed repeatedly did she accept her Indian blood.  I am sure this question will come to haunt her during the presidential campaign and it will adversely impact Indian American votes for Biden. On the other hand, Kamala factor will also dampen the big turnout of Indian Americans for Trump.

I think Kamala Harris is a great choice for Democrats as they needed a woman of color with capabilities of fundraising and administrative experience.

But do not call her INDIAN-American, she claims to be a black American as her father is Jamaican and that counts legally. The black American vote share in America is 15-18%, compared to 1.1% of Indian Americans. She will garner those votes possibly.
Some Indian Americans will face the dilemma – vote for a candidate of so-called Indian heritage or for the pro-Indian stance President Trump.
Many Indians are wary that both Joe Biden and Harris have questioned the legitimacy of India passing Article 370 and CAA. They are also right in saying that Biden is not tough on China.

I congratulate Senator Kamala Harris on joining the Democratic ticket with Joe Biden.  I quote what Biden said about her:
“Back when Kamala was Attorney General (of California) she worked closely with Beau (Biden’s son). I watched as they took on the big banks, lifted up working people, and protected women and kids from abuse. I was proud then, and I’m proud now to have her as my partner in this campaign.”
And here is what Harris said about him: “Joe Biden can unite the American people because he’s spent his life fighting for us. And as President, he’ll build an America that lives up to our ideals. I’m honored to join him as our party’s nominee for Vice President, and do what it takes to make him our Commander-in-Chief.”
