Pomp and show at Trump’s July 4 celebration

By South Asian Times

Washington: Defying Democrats’ objections considering the pandemic conditions, President Donald Trump led a big celebration of America’s Independence Day. There were fireworks (literal and figurative as he blasted the ‘radical left’ and Democrats), flypasts and pomp and show at the Salute to America event at the White House in Washington DC on July 4, and the day before at the Mount Rushmore National Memorial in North Dakota.

In his Independence Day address at the White House, Trump took a shot at anti-racial protesters in the US, vowing to overthrow the ‘radical left’, the Marxists, the anarchists, the agitators and the looters.

On July 3, standing in front of the monumental Mount Rushmore that commemorates four great American Presidents, Trump warned the crowd that the demonstrations against racial inequality that have spread across the country in the wake of the death of George Floyd while in police custody in Minneapolis threaten the foundations of American government.

In likely response to the toppling of statues by protesters in the country, the President announced that he is ordering the establishment of a “National Garden of American Heroes” with statues “of the greatest Americans that ever lived.”  His list includes late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia and baseball star Jackie Robinson as well as past presidents, anti-slavery advocates and others.

Meanwhile, the traditional Fourth of July parade in Washington, D.C., as well as firework shows in Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego and some other cities, were cancelled due to the pandemic. Macy’s curtailed fireworks in NYC were spread over five days and five boroughs.
